Orange Bourbon Smash Recipe
A good whiskey/bourbon smash is one of my favorite drinks. Nothing really compares to fresh fruit, whiskey, and a little sweetener, this Orange Bourdon Smash is no exception. Especially great to make when winter citrus is in abundance feel free to use any of your favorite citrus fruits in this beverage!
I always keep plenty of oranges around our house in winter, so you just know when that happens they will get mixed with whiskey at some point. This was a fun one to develop with the added layer of grand marnier and lemon juice to give the drink some added layers beyond just the fresh orange. I hope you enjoy it!

Equipment Needed
- Cocktail shaker: Essential for blending and chilling the ingredients. If you don't have a shaker you can use a large jar with an airtight lid.
- Muddler: To break down the orange and release its juices.
- Hawthorne strainer Affiliate Link: For straining the drink into your glass, with a smash like this drink having a hawthorne strainer Affiliate Link makes pouring the drink so much easier than if you just used the top of a cocktail shaker.
- Whiskey glass: Or your favorite glass for serving cocktails.
- Knife: To peel and cut the orange.
- Measuring jigger: For precise measurements of each ingredient.
Ingredients
- Simple Syrup - Homemade simple syrup is easy to make by dissolving equal parts sugar and water. For extra flair, consider infusing your syrup with flavors like orange or vanilla.
- Navel Orange - An average sixe navel orange is perfect
- Grand Marnier - I like grand marnier in this cocktail as the flavors from the cognac go well with the bourbon. You could easily substitute a different orange liqueur if you wanted, either cointreau or triple sec would work well.
- Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whiskey - Or your favorite bourbon. While Maker’s Mark is a fantastic choice for its smooth and slightly sweet profile, feel free to experiment with other bourbons or even rye whiskey. A spicier rye can add an interesting twist to the cocktail.
- Lemon Juice - Just a touch of extra acid to keep the drink balanced.

Instructions
Begin by adding the peeled half of a navel orange to the bottom of your cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to mash the orange thoroughly until it’s juicy and pulpy.
Pour in the Grand Marnier, bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup.
Add a large handful of ice to the shaker. Cover it tightly and shake vigorously for 10 to 20 seconds.
Fill a whiskey glass with fresh ice. Using a Hawthorne strainer Affiliate Link, pour the cocktail into the glass, straining out the orange pulp and ice from the shaker.
Finish your Orange Bourbon Smash with a garnish of orange peel or an orange slice. Serve immediately and enjoy!
