Mexican Maid - A twist on the Irish Maid
I am a huge fan of the modern classic cocktail the Irish Maid. It has such an amazing flavor and it is so simple to make. After having quite a few Irish Maids I thought to myself this recipe has to be good with pretty much any other spirit. This first I had to test out was Tequila...
Now I don't want to say this is better than a margarita because I fear a revolt but let's say this will be my drink this summer, it is just about perfect. The flavors from the cucumber and elderflower liqueur play off the tequila with such perfect harmony it is had to believe that everyone isn't already making this drink.

- Simple Syrup - To make some simple syrup check out my blog post on how to make Simple Syrup.
- Lemon Juice - Use fresh lemon juice.
- Elderflower Liquor - St. Germain's is the most popular brand of elderflower liqueur but there are others out there that are also delicious.
- Blanco Tequila - I have been making this with Tres Agave Blanco Tequila which find to be a great mixing tequila.
Instructions
Prepare Cucumber: Slice cucumber into wheels. Add three cucumber slices and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
Muddle: Using a muddler, gently muddle cucumber to release their juices and flavors.
Combine Ingredients: Pour in the lemon juice, elderflower liquor, and blanco tequila into the shaker.
Add Ice and Shake: Fill the shaker with a generous handful of ice and shake vigorously until well chilled, about 10 to 20 seconds.
Strain and Serve: Double strain the cocktail for a fine strain into a glass filled with ice to remove any cucumber pulp.
Garnish: Finish by garnishing the cocktail with a cucumber wheel for a fresh touch, you can also add lemon wedges as a garnish.

Tips, Tricks and Questions
Creative Variations
Just like I made this as a variation from the Irish Maid/Old Maid you can use a different main base spirit to make other versions. Try using Bourbon to make a Kentucky Maid, London Dry Gin for a London Maid, or Vodka for a Polish Maid.
Can I substitute elderflower liquor with another ingredient?
While elderflower liquor adds a distinct floral note, you can experiment with other floral liqueurs like St-Germain.
Can I make this as a large batch cocktail ahead of time for a party?
Yes to make enough for 4 drinks add about 12 cucumber slices to 2 ounces simple syrup and muddle. Add 3 ounces lemon juice, 3 ounces elderflower liqueur, and 8 ounces (1 cup) tequila. Once everything is mixed shake or stir and then double strain the the cucumbers out before dividing into four ice-filled glass.
What can I serve alongside this cocktail?
This cocktail pairs well with a variety of Mexican-inspired appetizers such as guacamole, ceviche, or street tacos.
