Classic Moscow Mule
The Moscow Mule has a captivating backstory that takes us back to the 1940s when vodka not a popular spirit. The birth of the Moscow Mule was a marketing strategy between Smirnoff vodka and a restauranteur who created house-made ginger beer. Both parties were struggling to get their products ordered.
So the ginger beer and vodka were mixed into a beverage! And thus the Moscow Mule was born, and even the name was a marketing ploy. The name was chosen to add a touch of mystique and sophistication to the cocktail, capitalizing on the exotic appeal of Russian vodka during the Cold War era. The "Moscow" in the name played into the notion that vodka was a Russian specialty. The "Mule" part of the name is said to reference the kick from the ginger beer.
Even the copper mugs that are now synonymous with the drink were a part of the marketing strategy. They distributed copper mugs embossed with the Smirnoff logo to bars and restaurants, encouraging bartenders to serve Moscow Mules in these distinctive vessels. It worked, with the copper mugs unique appearance!
And now here we are with a classic drink that helped popularize vodka in America!
Equipment Needed
- Copper Mugs: The Moscow Mule's traditional vessel, copper mugs, not only make for a stunning presentation but also help keep your drink ice-cold.
- Jigger or Measuring Tools: These ensure you get the right proportions for your cocktail.
- Ice: Essential for keeping your Moscow Mule refreshingly chilled.
- Bar Spoon: Handy for gentle stirring without over-diluting your cocktail.
Ingredients
- Vodka: A good-quality vodka forms the base of your Moscow Mule. If you are staying true to the original you can use Smirnoff. I tend to use Tito's when making a mixed vodka drink.
- Limes: Lime juice squeezed from fresh limes is a must. You will also want a lime you can cut into wedges for a garnish.
- Ginger Beer: Opt for a high-quality ginger beer to give your drink that spicy and refreshing kick. Not all ginger beers are created equal some are much sweeter, some more spicy, some a little flatter. I find myself preferring Fever Tree Ginger Beer.
Instructions
Moscow Mules are so easy to make, you don't even need any special equipment since you mix it right into the glass.
Fill a copper mug with ice. Pour in the vodka, fresh lime juice, and ginger beer.
Stir together to mix everything. Garnish with lime wedges!
Tips, Tricks and Questions
Creative Variations
While the classic Moscow Mule is delightful, there's room for creativity. Try out these inventive variations:
- Kentucky Mule: Substitute vodka with bourbon for a rich, whiskey twist.
- Mexican Mule: Use tequila instead of vodka to infuse your cocktail with a Mexican flair.
- Irish Mule: Give your Moscow Mule an Irish makeover by using Irish whiskey.
- Berry Mule: Add a few fresh berries (like strawberries or raspberries) and muddle in the bottom for a fruity, colorful kick.
- Pineapple Mule: Incorporate 2 or 3 ounces of 100% pineapple juice for a tropical twist that's perfect for summer.
- Apple Cider Mule: Add 2 or 3 ounces of fresh apple cider for a fall kick, bonus points I you add a touch of cinnamon simple syrup.
Can I use a different type of mug or glass?
While copper mugs are traditional, you can use other glasses. Try using a rocks/whiskey glass if you don't have the mugs.
Are there non-alcoholic Moscow Mule options?
Absolutely, you can make a Virgin Moscow Mule by omitting the vodka.
Can I make a batch for a party?
Yes, you can scale up the recipe to create a pitcher of Moscow Mules. Start by mixing together the lime juice and vodka at the scale you are looking for. Only add the ginger beer when you are ready to serve so that it doesn't lose its carbonation.
