Equipment Needed
- A small pot or saucepan
- Fine mesh strainer Affiliate Link
- Measuring spoons
- Wooden spoon for stirring
Ingredients
- Dried Hibiscus Flower - You can find this at most specialty or health grocery stores, it is also readily available online. While I always use loose leaf if you are able to find hibiscus tea in tea bags you can use those, I would guess you would want to use at least 3 teabags.
- Apple Cider - If possible use good quality apple cider and not apple juice, cider will come in the refrigerator section of the grocery store.
- Cinnamon Sticks - You'll need one cinnamon stick and i find it releases the flavors a little better if it is broken up before being added to the mulling cider.
- Whole Cloves - One the the typical spices found in mulling spices.
- Whole Allspice - Another spice typically found in mulling spices.

Instructions to Make Hibiscus Spiced Apple Cider
Prepare the Cider Base
Start by pouring the apple cider into a small pot. Break up your cinnamon stick into smaller pieces and add it to the pot along with the whole cloves and allspice.
Simmer for Flavor
Bring the cider to a light simmer and keep on a low heat. The key here is to allow the spices to gently infuse into the apple cider. Depending on how strong you like the flavor, you can simmer it for anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. I find that 10 minutes works best for me. Be advised to not let your spices mull for much longer than 30 minutes because the spices might start to turn the drink bitter if they sit for too long.
Add the Hibiscus
Once the cider has simmered with the spices, it’s time to add the star ingredient: dried hibiscus. I add this later because I don't want the cider to get too bitter or overpowering. Stir in a tablespoon of hibiscus and let it continue to simmer for an additional 5 minutes. This is just enough time that it will give the cider a slight tang and a beautiful ruby-red hue.
Strain and Serve
Remove the pot from heat and carefully strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer Affiliate Link to remove the spices and hibiscus. Be cautious, as the liquid will be hot! Serve immediately for a warm and cozy drink, or allow it to cool and enjoy it over ice for a refreshing cold version. If you are feeling fancy you can garnish you drink with apple slices or a cinnamon stick.
