Ritual Tequila Zero Proof Review
This is a fully unpaid-unaffiliated review and recipe. I want first and foremost to be honest with you all so you can make a decision to buy it, if you haven't already.
Price/Ease to Buy: One bottle of Ritual Zero Proof at the time of this publication will cost you about $30, often you can get a few dollars off with a promo code or sale. I happened to buy a few bottles to test with for a black friday sale and I think it was about 20% off. So if your main objective for not drinking alcohol, this isn't necessarily for you. As far as ease to buy, you can purchase ritual zero proof tequila Affiliate Link easily online. I purchased mine directly from the Ritual Website. You can also find it on Amazon. Recently I saw that they are beginning to have their product in some stores like Walmart but I am unsure if it is widespread and available everywhere.
Look/Bottle: The bottle is large (25.4 fl oz) and keeps for 12 weeks after opening. If you are using 2 ounces in most recipe this should make about 12 to 13 drinks. The bottle and label itself is very appealing. It is clear that it is zero proof but also would blend in with other bottles of alcohol. Maybe it is just me but I am thrown off by the caramel color of the zero proof tequila, seeing as the most common tequila is blanco and colorless. I suppose they are going for an aged tequila look which is usually that color. Overall I do think the color does affect the outcome look of the drink being a caramel looking color. At the end of the day the color of the zero proof tequila doesn't affect the taste.
Smell: The first thing I noticed, as well as others I had try it is the smell. The smell is the most accurate part, it smells extremely close to real tequila. Which I would consider a good thing, because as we all know smell and taste are connected. I would say the obvious part is that you don't have the alcohol burn when you are smelling the zero proof tequila.
Taste: I tasted the ritual zero proof tequila Affiliate Link on its own first and then used it to make a few variations of a margarita. Now listed on the bottle it does note the flavors, these flavors are: Blue Agave Flower, Mexican Lime, Tropical Guava, Cracked Sea Salt, Charred Oak, Mesquite Smoke, Black Peppercorn, Capsicum Fruit, Prickly Ash, and Green Bell Pepper. Tasting it straight really came as a surprise for me because it has a very strong smoky spicy taste, like the kind that sort of makes you cough a little like fresh cracked black pepper. Trying it plain I think the flavor that sticks out the most is the charred oak, mesquite smoke, and the black peppercorn. I wasn't expecting the spiciness that it does have, I would say the heat level is maybe a step down from a jalapeño but not by much. So let's move on to it mixed in a drink, because let's be real it wasn't meant to be drank straight. Made into a drink the first thing I continued to notice was the spice level. In a margarita mocktail the zero proof tequila does really still have quite a spicy finish. The forward taste of the drink does have a lot of similarities of a classic margarita like more notes of agave and the lighter flavors but the second half of the sip is dominated by the zip from the spice. The finish or aftertaste I would describe as black peppercorn. As I continued on my drink I realized that as the drink became diluted after about 5 minutes the sips became a lot more balanced! So as I have been recommending it to people I have suggested to let your drink sit in the ice for a few moments and I found some of the more nuanced flavors like the lime comes through in the drink more.
Overall: Does it taste exactly like a real tequila? No, not exactly like the real thing but close. Does it do a great job as an alcohol replacement and make a delicious drink? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes, as long as it is within your budget. I think if you are doing Dry January or are pregnant or just aren't drinking alcohol and wanting to make a margarita it is definitely worth trying at least once.

Tips, Tricks and Questions
Can I substitute the orange slice with orange shrub?
Absolutely! If you are very into mocktails or cocktails and want to make my Orange Shrub Recipe it makes a fantastic zero proof orange liqueur to replace the triple sec/cointreau. Simply omit the agave nectar and orange slice, and add ¾ to 1 ounce of orange shrub for a tangy twist.

While a cocktail shaker is nice you don't need one. Find any jar with a tight fitting lid and use that instead!
