Spicy Jalapeño Mocktail Margarita Recipe
I take my margaritas very seriously, even my my non-alcoholic margaritas have to taste like the real thing. This non-alcoholic cocktail features jalapeno slices to make a spicy margarita recipe.
This drink also uses fresh lime juice, agave, coconut water, and apple cider vinegar. The apple cider vinegar is my secret non-alcoholic substitute, it gives the drink the zip it needs to keep the mocktail on the tart side and from getting to sweet. (I also have my Ritual Zero Proof Tequila Margarita if you are looking for a recipe that features non-alcoholic spirits.)
This mocktail is also great because you can control the heat levels by how many slices of jalapeño go into the drink. Less jalapeño will have just a little heat while adding more will get you more spice!
Equipment Needed
- Cocktail shaker
- Muddler or wooden spoon
- Glass
- Knife for slicing ingredients
- Citrus juicer Affiliate Link
- Shallow plate (optional) for rimming the glass with salt
Ingredients
- Limes - For the freshly squeezed lime juice. You will probably also want an extra lime to make a lime slice for the garnish.
- Coconut Water - The coconut water is mostly used as a filler opposed to being there for taste, although it does add a nice natural sweetness.
- Apple Cider Vinegar - It sounds crazy but this is what I like to use as an alternative to the alcohol, it gives it that zip that is missing when you take the alcohol out of the drink.
- Agave Nectar - Agave is what tequila is derived from so it is the perfect sweetener to use for a non alcoholic margarita. If you don't have agave nectar plain simple syrup will work.
- Jalapeño - A fresh jalapeño for making the drink spicy! You will slice it and muddle a few of the slices. You might also want a fresh slice for garnishing your drink.
- Salt - (optional) for rimming the glass. I like to use a little kosher salt or sea salt to a small plate for the salt rim.
Instructions
If you desire a salty kick add salt to the rim of the glass. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your margarita glass. Dip the rim into a shallow plate of salt to coat it evenly.
Fill your margarita glass with ice and set it aside to chill while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
Thinly slice the jalapeño into rounds, remove the seeds if you prefer a milder spice level.
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 to 4 slices of jalapeño along with the agave nectar and apple cider vinegar. (If you like your drinks a little sweeter add an extra teaspoon of agave.) Gently muddle the jalapeños to release their flavor, the more you muddle them the more spicy the drink will be. If you don't have a true cocktail muddler Affiliate Link just use the handle of a wooden spoon it works just as great to get everything all muddled together.
Pour in the freshly squeezed lime juice, coconut water, and a handful of ice into the cocktail shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously to blend all the ingredients together.
Strain the Spicy Margarita Mocktail into your chilled glass over the prepared ice. Garnish with a slice of lime and a fresh jalapeño slice for an extra burst of flavor.
Tips, Tricks and Questions
Creative Variations
Experiment with the spice level by adjusting the number of jalapeño slices used during muddling. For a sweeter drink add more agave nectar according to your taste preferences. Go ahead and add fresh fruit with the fresh jalapenos like fresh watermelon, mango, or strawberries.
Can I make this mocktail ahead of time?
While it's best enjoyed fresh, yes you can make the mocktail a few hours ahead of time.
How can I make it less spicy?
To tame the heat, reduce the number of jalapeño slices used or remove the seeds before muddling. The seeds are where most of the spice is so including them with the muddling will make it spicer.
Can I substitute any ingredients?
Absolutely! Feel free to experiment with different sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, or swap coconut water for another liquid base like pineapple juice, orange juice, or lime seltzer.
