This particular mocktail uses a non-alcoholic spirit to help get its rounded out flavor. To be more specific it uses zero proof gin. I used Ritual Zero Proof Gin Affiliate Link at my house but any brand of non-alcoholic gin will work. With zero proof spirits becoming easier and easier to find these days you should give one a try.
My Ritual Zero Proof Gin Review
This is a fully unpaid-unaffiliated review and recipe. I want first and foremost to be honest with you all so you can make a decision to buy it, if you haven't already. If you are interested in other reviews check out my Ritual Zero Proof Tequila Review in my Zero Proof Margarita Recipe.
Price/Ease to Buy: One bottle of Ritual Zero Proof at the time of this publication will cost you about $30, often you can get a few dollars off with a promo code or sale. If you are a first time buyer on their website and you are willing to give them your email I believe they offer 20% off. I got this particular bottle of zero proof gin at the fancy beer store by my house, they have started carrying all sorts of non alcoholic spirits so it's worth checking or asking about at your local liquor store. So if your main objective for not drinking alcohol is saving money buying a bottle of zero proof spirits might not necessarily be for you. But as far as ease to buy, you can purchase Ritual Zero Proof Gin Affiliate Link easily online, from the Ritual Website, Amazon, and recently I saw that they are beginning to have their product in some stores like Walmart but I am unsure if it is widespread and available everywhere.
Look/Bottle: The bottle is large (25.4 fl oz) and keeps for 12 weeks after opening. (And you don't have to refrigerate it. If you are using 2 ounces in most recipe this should make about 12 to 13 drinks. The bottle and label itself is very appealing. The color of the gin itself is mostly clear with a slight haze to it, similar looking to regular gin.
Smell: I will start with the obvious part, you don't have the alcohol burn in your nose as you do when smelling traditional gin. I would say that it is a sweet smell with a little bit of an herb note.
Taste: When you take a sip of it straight the front taste is a bit sweet not like in a sugary way put in sort of a floral-ish way the sweet taste quickly turns more bitter but bitter in a good way. The bitterness could be lightly reminiscent of a juniper or pine flavor but also at the same time more herb like with hints of cucumber. The end of the sip has just a little zip to it. Overall I would compare this to more of an American/New World Gin where it certainly is not dry and the juniper flavor is very mild and the spirit is more smooth.
Overall: Does it taste exactly like a real gin? No, not exactly while it has similar characteristics of gin. Does it do a great job as an alcohol replacement and make a delicious drink? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes, as long as it is within your budget. I think if you are doing Dry January or are pregnant or just aren't drinking alcohol and wanting to make a really good mocktail it is definitely worth trying at least once.
Equipment Needed
- Drinking glass
- Muddler or spoon
- Knife
- Measuring spoons
- Stirring spoon
Ingredients
- Strawberries - You will just need two to three strawberries to make this and to make muddling easier you will want to cut two into pieces of strawberries.
- Thyme Simple Syrup - You will need to make the syrup for this drink, visit my blog post of Thyme Simple Syrup to learn more about it.
- Lemon Juice - Just a little here, I didn't want this turning into strawberry lemonade, just enough to help with the flavor.
- Gin Alternative - A good non-alcoholic drink is always going to be good with a zero proof spirit. If you have a gin alternative you love you that one, I used Ritual but there are plenty of other brands out there.
- Seltzer Water - I use just plain seltzer buy you could also use strawberry or lemon flavored seltzer for extra flavor.

Tips, Tricks and Questions
Variations
Try swapping out the thyme garnish and thyme simple syrup for garden-fresh basil leaves with basil simple syrup or fresh mint leaves and mint simple syrup. Use Club Soda or a Flavored seltzer instead of plain seltzer. Use lime juice instead of lemon juice for a splash of lime and garnish with a lime wedge.
Can I use fresh or frozen strawberries?
Fresh strawberries are recommended for the best flavor, but you can also use frozen strawberries if fresh ones aren't available. Just be sure to thaw them before muddling.
Where can I find gin alternative?
Many specialty stores and online retailers offer a variety of alcohol-free gin alternatives. I would even check our local liquor store a lot of them have started carrying a good zero proof selection. You can even get Ritual Zero Proof Gin Affiliate Link directly from Amazon.
Can I make this ahead of time for a party?
While it's best enjoyed fresh, you can prepare the strawberry mixture ahead of time and chill it in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, simply add ice and seltzer water, then give it a quick stir.
Is there a substitute for thyme simple syrup?
If you don't have thyme simple syrup on hand, you can use regular simple syrup or even honey simple syrup as a sweetener. You can also use almost any herb based simple syrup as a good substitute.

Notes
Thyme Simple Syrup
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 8-10 springs thyme
Instructions
- In a small pot add the water and sugar. Bring to a boil on the stovetop. Once the water starts to simmer whisk to incorporate the sugar into the water.
- Once the sugar is dissolved and the water is boiling add the thyme. Let the thyme sit in the boiling simple syrup for 30 to 60 seconds before removing from the heat.
- Let the thyme simple syrup rest for at least 20 minutes before straining out the thyme, but you can wait longer to strain out the thyme for a stronger flavor. Once cooled transfer the strained simple syrup to an airtight jar and store in the refrigerator. Use in cocktails and mocktails.
